…continued more about Lake Oconee…

Lake Oconee runs through Morgan, Greene, Hancock, and Putnam counties which flows into Lake Sinclair. It’s known as Lake Country, famous for having Spectacular Golfing Communities. To name a few; Reynolds landing, Reynolds Plantation, Cuscowilla, Harbor Club, Water’s Edge and Great Waters featuring 7 world-class golf courses.

The total shoreline at full pool is measured at approximately 376 miles. Lake Oconee is the second largest lake located entirely in Georgia, with over 19,050 acres. Depths of up to 100 feet can be seen close to the dam, but the average depth is approximately 21 feet.

Lake Oconee was built in 1980 when Georgia Power Company completed the Wallace Dam.

Georgia Power formed Lake Oconee in 1979 and is filled by the Oconee and Appalachia Rivers. The water in Lake Oconee is recycled from Lake Sinclair to produce electricity.

Own your piece of Lake Oconee! Spend the day on the lake; boating skiing, fishing and swimming. Play golf or do a little sidewalk shopping at many antique and gift bouquets. Tour the Antebellum and Victorian-era homes or go skeet and trap shooting, hiking, biking or horseback riding. Of course relaxing on a dock watching the sunset on the water is another option to make Lake Oconee feel like home.

~~Madison~~

Madison was named the #1 Small Town in America by Travel Holiday Magazine.

If you are a first-time visitor you should stop by the Madison Visitors Center on the square. Learn about our pre-Civil War and Victorian architecture and why General Sherman spared our town on his march from Atlanta to the sea. Grab a downtown shopping guide and a walking/driving tour brochure that covers our National Register Historic District, one of the largest in the state of Georgia!

Start by checking out the architecture on our new Courthouse while reading the tribute of names on the bricks below your feet. Then tour the Rogers House, the Rose Cottage, the African-American Museum, Heritage Hall and of course, Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, an 1895 graded school building. Permanent museum exhibits depict life in the region during the 19th to early 20th century.

Morgan County has an interesting history of agriculture. Learn more by visiting Big Sandy Creek Dairy Farm, which offers a hay ride and milking demonstration, Jack’s Creek Tree Farm, which offers a hay ride and tree tour, or Johnston Dairy Farm, which offers a dairy tour.

Shopping: Madison is home to over 160 antique dealers, 45+ specialty shops and numerous art galleries.

Restaurants: To name a few; Ye Olde Colonial Restaurant, Chophouse Grille, Amici Italian Café, Adrian’s Place, O’Hara’s, Perk Avenue, Town 220, The Icehouse, Tequila Express and the Madison Gift Mart & Café.

On weekends in Madison, take a carriage ride through the historic district!

~~Rutledge~~ (West from Madison)

This is home to one of the largest State Parks in Georgia, Hard Labor Creek State Park. While this park may be best known for its golf course The Creek, it also offers a wide range of recreational opportunities in a beautiful wooded setting. Horseback riders can explore 22 miles of trails, while hikers have their own 2.5-mile trail. A lakeside beach is open for swimming during summer. The park provides one of Georgia's best golf values, along with a pro shop, driving range, rental carts and junior/senior citizen discounts. Hard Labor Creek is thought to have been named by slaves who tilled summer fields or by Native Americans.

Shopping: Rutledge has several antique stores and artisans, including Barn Raising Antiques and Red Doors Studio.

Restaurants: The favorite is the Yesterday Café located on the downtown square and was recently on Good Morning America, as its Buttermilk pie was voted the #4 best tasting pie in the country!! The Caboose, the last railroad car in Rutledge is also a delightful place to eat and you can’t miss it; it’s bright red and located beside the Stop Sign that is mounted in a barrel in the middle of the 4-way.

Other cities/towns in Morgan County include Bostwick (North of Madison) & Buckhead (East of Madison). Also, Apalachee, Beacon Heights, Braswell, Brownwood, Centennial, Dickson, Dorsey, Fairplay, Godfrey, High Shoals, Parks Mill, Pennington, Reese & Swords.
